  • 454 g ground beef
  • ½ onion, diced

  • 11 g chili powder
  • 4 g cumin
  • 1 g paprika
  • 1 g onion powder
  • 2 g garlic powder

  • 1 g black pepper
  • 2 g sugar
  • 6 g kosher salt, plus more to taste

Mga Tagubilin

  1. Beef Filling

    1

Cook the ground beef and onions over medium-high heat until the beef is browned and no longer pink. Drain the fat. This should take about 5–7 minutes.

  2. 2

Season with the taco seasoning and tomato paste. Cook for about 2 minutes to toast the spices and cook off the raw taste of the tomato paste.

  3. 3

Add the water (160 ml), bring to a simmer, and simmer uncovered for about 2–3 minutes until the sauce is thickened. Taste to adjust the seasoning.

  4. Taco Shells

    4

In the meantime, warm your taco shells. For hard shells, bake in a preheated 325°F (160°C) oven for about 6 minutes. For soft shells, warm them stacked on top of each other and wrapped in foil in the same oven for about 8 minutes.

  5. Assembly

    5

Serve in 8–12 taco shells of choice (hard or soft) with your garnishes of choice (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, avocado or guacamole, salsa, etc.).

FAQ

Can you make ground beef tacos ahead of time?+
Yes! You can cook the meat filling up to 3 days ahead and store it in an airtight container in the fridge, then reheat it gently before serving. You can also freeze the cooked filling for up to 3 months for even longer storage.
What can I substitute for ground beef in this taco recipe?+
Ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based ground meat work great as 1-to-1 swaps. You can also use crumbled tofu or lentils for a vegetarian option, though you may want to add a pinch more salt since these alternatives are milder.
Why is my ground beef taco filling watery?+
This usually means you didn't drain the fat properly after browning the meat, or you added the water before the initial fat was removed. Make sure to drain the pan thoroughly in Step 1, and if it's still too watery after simmering, cook uncovered for a few extra minutes to evaporate the excess liquid.
How do you keep taco shells from getting soggy?+
Warm your shells right before serving and assemble the tacos just before eating rather than filling them in advance. You can also lightly brush the inside of shells with oil or place a layer of shredded cheese on the shell first—it acts as a barrier against the moist filling.
